Many people downsize at some point during their lives, and the process can be traumatic. In this article (subscription might be required) a geriatric psychiatrist lists what he believes are the three keys to successful downsizing.
First, get one or more “navigators” in the form of independent-minded individuals who can help you make key decisions during each stage of the move.
Second, be thoughtful about choosing symbols and rituals which can imbue the downsizing with greater meaning.
Third, use the downsizing as an opportunity for both renewal and reinvention.
